The supplier of most of our fabulous black opals, mines and cuts their gemstones, and have been doing so for over 20 years. This is an example of how black opals are found in layers. Opal cutters try to orient the black opalite under the precious opal to enhance the play of color. Oops. . . Our cutter accidentally cut through the layers of precious opal revealing what you see here.
This 5.87 carat Lightning Ridge black opal is mounted in a form fitted 22K bezel. Bale and the back of the pendant are 18K gold. The bale is stamped 18k 22k FML. The pendant measures 32.9 mm (1.3 inches) in length by 14 mm (0.55 inches) in width and 5.1 mm (0.20 inches) high.
